Sustrans Signs

This page gives a range of practical tips that will help ensure your cycle ride is fun and enjoyable!

There are tips for cyclists, drivers, and pedestrians

Tips for Cyclists:

Dont ride on pavements unless there are signs permitting this always ride considerately.

Give lorries space and hold back - a lorry might be turning at any corner. NEVER cut inside.

Carry a good lock. Try to lock the frame and wheels to an immovable object, preferably a bike stand.

Cycling at night: Cycling at night is just as practical and brings all the same benefits as cycling by day. However there are some simple but important steps to ensure that you are both safe and within the law. Use lights at night.

Dress for visibility: It is advisable to wear bright reflective clothing when cycling at night. A reflective jacket or waistcoat that slips over your coat will help to define your shape in the dark. Reflective patches, badges, tape and stickers can be applied anywhere on the bike or rider, and are recommended to maximise your visibility.

Be alert: At night it is easier to spot approaching cars because of their headlights but remember that you may be dazzled by lights on full beam.

Dont just get on your bike: ensure its safe and check that your brakes, tyres, lights, and steering are working properly.

Ensure your bike is properly adjusted - wrongly positioned saddles and handlebars are uncomfortable and inefficient.

Consider wearing a cycle helmet that meets current safety standards

Plan a route that suits your abilities if you have not ridden recently. You could also ride with someone whos used to riding on the road to increase your confidence.

Tips for Drivers:

Think Bike - expect to see cyclists, slow down and drive considerately

Be patient - a couple of seconds could help avoid an accident

Give cyclists space when passing and look carefully before opening car doors

Allow for sudden movements by cyclists, especially when its windy or the road surfaces are poor.

Keep cycle lanes and advanced stop lines clear.

Remember to signal and avoid cutting up cyclists, especially when turning left.

Tips for Pedestrians:

Dont walk on cycle tracks and take care when crossing them. Remember that bikes are quiet and you may not hear them coming.

"Shared Use" paths are provided where cyclists and pedestrians can mix safely. Where a white line is used to separate them, keep on the correct side of the line as shown by the signs and any markings on the ground.
