Kids Bikes - Top Tips

1. Make sure it fits! Many parents think that buying a slightly oversized bike is cost effective as it will last for longer. However if the bike doesn't fit properly your child will not have full control over it and this can be dangerous. We strongly recommend that you choose a bike that fits now, and this will normally accommodate up to 3 years of growth.

2. Make sure the bike has reflectors and lights - to keep your child safe from other traffic (even if your family cycle rides are during the day, it is likely that your child will venture off with his or her friends at other times of the day too!)

3. Choose the right type of bike - so for example if you are planning to cycle the off-road paths such as in parks and in the countryside, a mountain bike style would be best.

4. Make sure the bike is lightweight as this makes it easier to push for your child

5. Make sure the saddle height is correct - for comfortable cycling your child should be able to fully extend their leg when the foot is on the lower pedal

6. Make sure the saddle and handle bar grips are comfortable too! Most cycle shops will allow you to pick the bike you like and if required change the saddle and grips. These are the only 2 contact points between your child's body and the bike so if you can get this right then everyone can have a good time!

7. And finally, don't be blinded by science! Most modern kid's bikes have suspension and you already know the frame should be light and the saddle and grips should be comfortable.

The other important thing that you need to know is in relation to the number of gears. Generally young kids need about 6 gears whereas teenagers are likely to use 21 (you can get up to 27 gears on a bike)

Armed with all this information, you are now ready to go to your local cycle shop with confidence. Expect to pay between £100-200 for a good child's bike with growing room for up to 3 years.
